County to reconfigure North Kona traffic lights

The Hawai’i County Traffic Division will resynchronize and coordinate traffic lights in the North Kona area starting September 28 in an effort to reduce traffic congestion, especially during rush hour.

As a result, three different plans will be created for the traffic patterns: one for the morning from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., one for the noon period from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and one for the afternoon and start of evening. hours from 2.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.

ICX Transportation Group has been engaged to observe traffic from September 28-30, 2021 and will help refine traffic plans.

The signals included in this project are:

  • Highway 19 to Highway 190 (Palani Road)
  • Route 11 to Henry Street
  • Route 11 to Malulani Drive
  • Route 11 to Nani Kailua Drive
  • Route 11 to Puapuaanui Street
  • Route 11 to Lako Street
  • Route 11 to Seaview Circle
  • Route 11 to Laaloa Avenue
  • Highway 11 at Kamehameha III Road
  • Palani Rd at Lanihau Mall
  • Center
  • Kuakini Hwy at Palani Road
  • Kuakini Expressway to Henry Street
  • Kuakini Expressway at Hanama Place
  • Kuakini Highway to Kalani Street
