Edinburgh’s latest road closures and traffic light updates for motorists in the capital

Driving around Edinburgh while dodging roadworks isn’t always the easiest to master as the city prepares for an extension to the tram line.

The Trams to Newhaven project – which will add three miles to the existing tram line – is still scheduled to open in spring 2023, but as a result Leith Walk has suffered severe road closures and works over the past two years.

Over the weekend many roads were closed due to the Edinburgh Marathon as runners traveled from Holyrood to Musselburgh on a 26-mile course.

Here are all the new roadworks and temporary traffic lights drivers should be aware of starting today (Monday May 30) as shared by Edinburgh Travel News on Twitter – Edinburgh City Council’s weekday travel information service.

Ashburnham Road is closed at Station Road for the next five days as the council installs an elevated passage table.

Infirmary Street is closed in its entirety until 3:00 p.m. due to filming – traffic may be blocked for ten minutes as needed between 6:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at High School Wynd.

Northfield Broadway has temporary traffic lights between Portobello Road and Royal High Primary School to give a pod to a telephone mast – luckily the closure is not expected to be in place until the 30th.

There are lane closures at Hutchinson Cottages on Slateford Road for “utility connections” – with the closures in place until next month, June 19.

Cambridge Avenue has temporary traffic lights between Pilrig Street and Balfour Street for BT while they install cables – parking is suspended on both sides. They will be in place until Friday, June 3.

Council City resurfaces Wester Hailes Road (from the railway bridge about 200m to the south) and there will be nightly closures every weeknight for the next two weeks. The road will be closed from 7 p.m. to 6.30 a.m. each weekday evening, a detour is signposted via Murrayburn Road.

There are temporary three-way traffic lights at Parkhead Loan on Longstone Road today, May 30, as Scottish Water carries out manhole repairs.

A year-long shutdown was also shared today – the footpath between South College Street and Potterow is now closed due to a building renovation. There is a signposted pedestrian diversion via the Potterow underpass.

Sainte-Catherine Square is closed until Friday June 3 while Edinburgh City Council resurfaces the roadway.

Riccarton main road has temporary traffic lights today, May 30, while Scottish Water carries out manhole repairs.
